D Gallery, a contemporary art gallery, has now opened in Phuket, Thailand.

Over 220 sqm of contemporary works and between six to eight exhibitions by leading and emerging artists throughout the year is what D Gallery is promising. Located in the Royal Phuket Marina on Thepkrasattri Road, D Gallery was established in 2007 to promote upcoming as well as established Southeast Asian artists principally from Thailand and Vietnam.

D Gallery staff claims that while being committed to offering the finest quality artworks, the gallery also intends to evolve into a cultural and an educational reference point for visitors to and residents of Phuket.

A range of different materials such as canvas, wood, paper, fabric, aluminum and lacquer as well as styles such as abstract, figurative and landscapes feature in the artworks shown at D Gallery. The works, explain the staff, are aesthetically inspired by all principle aspects of life, whether it be social or political.

The Phuket Post sought D Gallery's Director, Rob Collins' ideas for the direction of the gallery, and how it will set itself apart from the plethora of galleries mushrooming all around the island.

PP: What kind of art will be mostly found in D-Gallery?

RC: Modern contemporary Thai and Vietnamese arts. In the future, we will expand to include Burmese and other regional artists.

PP:. How do you source your artists, and what are the things you look for in an artist?

RC: We look for the artists with the best potential in the country both in terms of artistic merit and investment. Above all, we look for technique and originality in an artist.

PP: How will you set yourself apart from other galleries on Phuket?

RC: To be honest, we aim to be the first gallery in Phuket that holds regular exhibitions (6-8 exhibitions a year) by Asia's leading artists. There are a couple of serious galleries in Phuket but they concentrate on selling mostly decorative works often by European artists.

PP: What can people expect at the D-gallery, when they visit?

RC:We obviously hope that they will find some of the most interesting and different art in the region. At the same time, a visit can simply be a fun way of acquainting yourself with Asian art that you may never have experienced before.

PP: Is there a general price range to your exhibits?

RC: Prices range from anywhere between 100k - 500k THB. Modern contemporary art in the West has appreciated considerably in recent years placing it outside the reach of the average collectors. Meanwhile works by leading Southeast Asian artists remain eminently affordable and investible. With globalisation being the mantra in the modern contemporary art world, these works are beginning to attract serious investment interest.
