The league bowls back into action
(2007-02-06 12:51:19)
The Island Furniture Cricket League has begun its second year with four teams all eager for a bit of batting and bowling. The first match of the season took place on 21 January at the new pitch at Cherng Talay school, between Phuket Academicals (previously known as the BIS team) and Island Cricket Club.

Matches will take place each Sunday until the final on 8 April, after which the teams will be preparing to compete in the Phuket International Sixes, to be held at Karon Stadium, and a tour team is likely to head for Chiang Mai at the end of that month.

The change of venue for the league games (it was staged last year at British International School) follows the remarkable acceptance of the game among the Cherng Talay youth. Members of the league have instigated a cricket tutoring scheme at the school, which the kids have jumped to attend.

Another advantage of the move is that refreshments will now be available during the matches, courtesy of Bill Scott’s Andaman Mobile Catering. Mr Scott will also be providing English beers and cider to make the atmosphere complete.

The four teams competing in this year’s league are: the Cricketers Club Phuket, sponsored by the Surin Bay Inn; Patong Cricket Club, sponsored by the Aussie Bar, Patong; the Island Cricket Club, last year’s runners-up; and the Phuket Academicals, last years winners

Matches will be played over 35 overs, with each team playing the other teams twice throughout the season. The top two teams on points at the end of the season will go into the final.
