Duck out of the Sun
(2008-03-16 09:16:35)
My first visit to the N.C. Restaurant was a bit confusing and quite exciting at the same time. Parched and hungry I was looking desperately for a place to escape the scorching sun and treat myself to a nice leisurely lunch.

Not knowing what to expect, I wandered into the first floor of the restaurant, which turned out only to be a sit'n'chill lounge for tourists and locals to rest their weary feet and grab some snacks and refreshment.

If you would like to have lunch please walk upstairs to our restaurant on the second floor, said the waitress with the friendly, welcoming smile. As I made my way up, the old ceramics in traditional Chinese style caught my eye, as did the little make-shift indoor garden. It was like walking into another era, a long-gone one when so many restaurants were similarly decorated.

I was impressed with the sight of old Chinese tiffins set up in every corner of the restaurant. Seashells are displayed set on poles around the room. Old, old pictures on the walls tell the story of Phuket in the ancient times. Just the few minutes of waiting for the food to arrive transported me into that time, so entrancing were these paintings. Nothing like Roast Duck to bring you back to the immediate present, though.

It came in a red curry that was not spicy for me and I am sure wouldn't be too spicy for foreigners. The deep fried mackerel with soy sauce was tender and crispy all at the same time and tasted a bit salty and sweet. Even more delicious when eaten with cooked. Then if the smell of Durian doesn't scare you off, you really must try the Sticky rice and Durian in Coconut milk (Kao Neaw Durian). It's a massive-calorie intake that's guaranteed to make you fat in minutes, but go for it. You can burn it all off shopping for souvenirs after.

The atmosphere was comfortable, the place dimly-lit but with p,kenty of natural breeze. Just how different it is would make a great setting for a fun meal with friends, making small talk and samplings various delicacies, at a reasonable rate. Those three dishes that I demolished with gusto cost me a pleasant 195 baht.

Various local Thai and traditional Thai dishes are also available. Thai desserts are ready to serve. It's not easy to find a good roast duck curry at this time of the day, and if you're in the neighbourhood, looking for a place to rest those tired ol' feet and enjoy a pleasant afternoon...go to N.C. It's not far from Phuket Royal City hotel, near the bus stop.
