Cherng Talay seems to be the place everyone wants to be. Property developments, sandwich shops...Tesco, even. So it comes as little surprise that the one place on the island that churns out pie after Super Pie, is found right here.
A prominent “Lady Pie” signs beckons you to a small, cosy garden space. Pretty, but simple and unassuming, the place seems to make only one claim...great pies. It delivers that with aplomb.
Amble over to the counter before you settle in and take a look at the truly exhaustive list of pies that can be had.
It's not an easy choice to make, a large blackboard to the top lists a number of the favourites. Steak, kidney and steak, mushroom and chicken, chicken curry...you see what we mean. It's tough. Pick one, anyone. They're all yummy.
What's more, they're all made right there, in the Lady Pie workshop just two doors down. Once you've decided on your favourite, pop down to the workshop and take a peek. Nothing like the scent of pies in the oven and sight of all that pastry and dough rolled out expertly by the half dozen or so pie ladies to work up an appetite.
By the time you're back to find a table, you know you're in for some good stuff. The restaurant itself is a pleasant enough location, with the simple décor and many plants creating a light, relaxed space.
The pies themselves are deliciously crusty, the pastry and the stuffing always a perfect union. The mushroom and chicken pie is, of course, a classic. The steak pie, if possible, even more so. The gravy is thick and flavourful, the pastry yields delightfully to your knife, and your fork will find that the meat is cooked just right.
There are a number of sides to choose from...mashed peas, of course...and potatoes, boiled vegetables. Lady Pie also does a range of coffees and teas, in case you want to wash your meal down with a mocha or an iced tea. Cheesecakes and etceteras are on offer, for the more indulgent.
Lady Pie of course also delivers their frozen pies to locations all over the island, and if you, unlike the rest of the island, are not heading Cherng Talay way, look out for the sign at restaurants. If you are in the area, be sure to find it. Cocktail sized party-pies are also offered, grab some to go, just in case you craving for another delicious bite not too long after. We did and we did.
