Chronic Fatigue – what can you do
Everyone feels tired sometimes, but if fatigue is your constant companion it could be seen as your body telling you to take a closer look at your life lifestyle or that there is a deeper health issue that needs to be addressed.
Fatigue is a symptom rather than a disease, even if it is chronic. Chronic fatigue may be defined as a significant drop in overall energy for at least three months. While chronic fatigue is not necessarily associated with physical or mental exertion, a chronically fatigued person may also feel particularly exhausted after exertion, out of proportion to the level of energy that is exerted. Although it is frequently associated with other physical or psychological conditions, chronic fatigue may also be a signal to modify some of our everyday lifestyle habits in order to improve the body's "energy economy" and in turn this can decrease the likelihood of disease. One way to improve everyday habits is through the choice of foods that we eat.
Making healthy food choices is an important step toward regaining energy and combating the symptoms of chronic fatigue.
There are several things one can do to elevate these systems. Eat more of the following and watch your energy levels return better than ever before.
Organically grown fruits and vegetables
Nuts and Seeds can give the body much needed nutrients
Use cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil for a healthier oil option
Drink fresh young green coconut water to balance the acid – alkaline levels in the body
Cold water fish including salmon, tuna, herring, mackerel and halibut for their beneficial omega 3.
Avoid high-glycemic index carbohydrate-containing foods, such as sweets, pastries, soft drinks and candy; leave out stimulants, such as coffee, caffeinated soft drinks, sodas, black tea; and saturated and trans fats oils.
Stimulants especially coffee and other strongly caffeinated beverages and alcohol can contribute to chronic fatigue because they represent a "metabolic distraction" to a tired-out body already doing its best to cope with energetic challenges. Stimulants and alcohol can be like a roller-coaster you can't get off, and they are best avoided by chronically fatigued individuals.
Romaine & Avocado Salad is excellent energy booster, it is a quick and easy to prepare and a way to add flavour and nutrition to your meal times. The light dressing makes this salad lower in fat than most, without losing flavour.

















Prep Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:
1 large head romaine lettuce, outside leaves discarded
1 large tomato chopped
1 small red bell pepper cut in thin julienne, 1 inch long
1/2 small avocado cut into chunks
2 TBS coarsely chopped walnuts
Dressing
2 TBS lemon juice
2 tsp balsamic vinegar
extra virgin olive oil to taste
Cracked black pepper to taste
Directions: Remove outer leaves of lettuce heads and discard. Cut off tops of leaves and discard. Tops are bitter. Chop remaining inner leaves. Rinse in cold water, and if you have a salad spinner, spin lettuce to dry. If you don't have one, remove as much water as possible in a colander and then dry with paper towels. This will keep the flavour of the salad from getting diluted. Whisk together lemon juice, vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper in a small bowl and toss with salad greens. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts if desired. Serves 4
