Myth 10 ? Muscle does not, and can NOT turn into Fat! They are of two different molecular structures. This also means that FAT Can NOT Turn into muscle! Both muscle cells and fat cells get bigger or smaller depending on activity levels and fat intake respectively. Your muscles need sufficient stimulus to grow and this can only happen at 80% of your Maximum. Anything less than this will improve your muscles strength endurance and muscle tone, but a few short weeks without this stimulus and they will begin to go back to how they were before. If you don?t USE it?You Will Lose it!
Myth 9 ? If you sit on the couch, and watch sport, you cannot get fit. This same methodology applies to those who spend their entire exercise time in the cardio room and expect to come out with bulging muscles. It cannot and will not happen. The only true way to change your body is to increase your lean muscle through resistance training, whether that be in the weight room with machines or free weights, or in the group fitness classes such as BodyPump, supplement that with some cardio exercise for at least 45 minutes a day and a lean, high fibre, low fat diet.
Myth 8 ? All Calories are NOT Created EQUAL! There are 4 calories in a single gram of Carbohydrate (whether it be complex carbs such as brown rice or simple table sugar) and also in single gram of protein, however fat has 9 calories in a single gram and therefore takes twice as much oxygen to break down.
Before you start looking at how much sugar you have in your diet, start looking for all the excess fat as it is the fat which clogs our arteries and causes arthrosclerosis or hardening of the arteries, heart attacks and strokes. A healthy amount of fat per day is only 30 grams for a female and approximately 40 grams for a male.
Myth 7 ? A glass of red wine with dinner is acceptable in a healthy heart diet, however 3, 4 or 5 glasses every day is not. Alcohol cannot be stored in the body, so therefore it must be broken down and converted to energy immediately, which has a dramatic effect on our normal metabolism of carbohydrates, Protein and more importantly FAT! As our alcohol intake increases so too does our intake of high fat foods, so if you?re trying to lose excess fat, then maybe start with replacing wine with water! You will be pleasantly surprised.
Myth 6 - A kilo of fat and a kilo of muscle still weigh?A kilo! However, a kilogram of muscle takes up approximately a third of the space that the same amount of fat takes up?so tell me, which would you prefer to have in your body?
Myth 5 ? Spending time training your CORE will help you become thinner, can ONLY be true if it is supplemented with some serious strength training of the whole body before hand, and its followed by some intense cardio and supplemented with a lean diet.
If you want to condition your CORE (lower back / abdominals / obliques) the truth is that they contract more under high intensity strength training in exercises that utilise multiple muscle groups such as in B/B Squats, medicine ball lunges, dead lifts, clean and press exercises, than in localised exercises that just train your rectus abdominus or oblique Muscles.
Myth 4 ? I burnt 500 Calories today in class, so let?s go and celebrate with a piece of chocolate cake and coffee. There is nothing wrong with having some cake and coffee if that?s what you want to do, but don?t let food be the reward for exercise.
This is called ?Training to Eat??.however if you want to be successful in your health and fitness goals, you must learn to ?Eat to Train?. Reward your body with the food it needs to be at top performance in the health club and in life and then you will truly reap the rewards of a healthy and fit life.
Myth 3 ? Wellness is a STATE of MIND not an exercise class or a piece of equipment and the reason we should exercise in the first place! So do not fall for any gimmicks. Just find what you love to do, find your own balance, let go of your stress levels and you will have true wellness.
Myth 2 ? You do not have to get fit to go to a health club. Everyone understands that first timers and beginners may feel self conscious, but guess what, so does nearly everyone else, no matter how long they have been training for. Health Clubs are there for people who have similar goals and interests and have made that decision, that they are important, and they deserve to be healthy and fit. Health clubs are for everybody as well as being for EVERY BODY!
Myth 1 ? ?It?s too late for me.? ?I was born this way.? ?I don?t have enough time.? ?I am big boned.? There are some medical reasons why people are overweight or more accurately overfat. However for the most of us, there are not. We are in charge of our destiny. It?s NEVER too late to be the BEST Version of YOU!
You owe it to yourself, to your family and loved ones to get up off the couch, talk to someone who is educated in health and fitness, and then do what they say. Life is way too short to give power to others without first giving it to yourself! There is only one version of YOU!
No matter how hard you train, you cannot achieve the body of someone else. All you can do is achieve YOUR BEST BODY.So go on and get busy training and be the best you can be! Just Do It!
