The definition of groin pain is in the area where the upper thigh and lower abdomen meet. The most common cause of groin pain in males is musculo-tendinous strain of the adductor group which often occurs in those who play sports such as football.

A total of 22 muscles are attach to each inominate bone and apply different directional and shearing forces to the pelvic ring. The male groin is particularly susceptible to injury because of the embryonic descent of the testes.

In some cases, groin pain is caused by a bone injury, hernia or kidney stones. Although testicular pain and groin pain are different, a testicle condition can also cause pain that refers to the groin area.

In the older patient degenerative changes in the hip joint cannot be discounted when trying to diagnose chronic groin pain. The groin and pelvic area is a minefield for differential diagnosis and in many cases a patient often demonstrates a mixture of clinical diagnoses rather than one specific condition.

Adolescent groin pain should also be considered during the period of bone growth. There are a number of anatomical sites that can be affected by the strong pull of developing muscles and tendons and the forces they produce during periodic growth spurts.

Diagnosis can be divided into acute, degenerative or insidious. The most common cause of groin pain is a strain of the adductor longus, rectus abdominus, iliopsoas or rectus femeris muscles.

It is advisable to seek medical attention if you have groin pain accompanied with a lumbar, abdominal or chest pain or have severe testicular pain accompanied with nausea, fever, chills or blood in the urine.
