A GROUP of Phuket businesses have ‘cancelled’ the low season.
Instead, the period between April and November will be renamed the ‘Summer Season’ to better reflect the fact that Phuket is one of the world’s top year-round holiday destinations.
“We’re going to have a bit of fun with this campaign,’ said group spokesman, Nick Anthony, the managing director of Indigo Real Estate.
“Phuket has an abundance of delightful sunny weather, with cooling afternoon showers that refresh the island and set up some spectacular sunsets.
“Summer is also a good time of the year to visit Phuket because there are some great deals on room rates to be had and lots of local festivals.
“The 2008 Summer Season was spectacular, with February and March weather rolling all the way through to November.
“The beaches are virtually deserted, hotels offer value deals and restaurants don’t require bookings.”
The six-month international public relations campaign launching ‘Summer in Phuket’ is designed to counter the negative media reports generated by the global economic downturn and Thailand’s ongoing political troubles.
“Phuket was named the number one luxury destination by the New York Times in January, and we are taking a pro-active approach to promoting Phuket to make sure we stay number one,” said Mr Anthony.
“We are looking to change the incorrect perception that the weather is bad during what used to be called the low season,” he said.
Dominique Ronge, from the Chedi Phuket, said Phuket was a great destination which has enjoyable sunny weather all year round.
“But we need to be proactive in delivering the positive message to audiences all around the world, that Phuket’s luxury market is thriving, despite the world’s tailspin,” she said.
“We have to tell people out there that we are open for business all year round.”
The campaign will be officially launched with a lavish cocktail party at the Chedi Hotel this week.
