MORE THAN a decade ago, one of my family’s favourite dining places was “Yoy Phochana”, a Thai-Chinese restaurant located at 33 Dibuk Road, opposite the Phuket Thaihua Museum at Old Phuket.
Tonight I revisited Yoy Phochana and invited a guest to come along to dine where the locals eat delicious signature dishes at a great price.
The starter is a must-have dish of deep-fried Mackerel with Soy Sauce (40baht). Although the fish is crispy and golden brown, it remains moist and tender. Actually my partner and I couldn’t resist having one piece each as it is so tasty. I promise you would not like to share!
There are many recommended dishes like “Yod Ma La Phad Gung” (70baht) or Stir-Fried Crowns of Cavilla fruit with Prawn sauce. Or the brave can choose “Phad Phak Kiam Chai Kra Por Moo” (70baht), this is a dish with Chinese stir-fried green mustard pickled in a pig’s stomach. It comes with spring onion, Chinese parsley, red chill, and a hint of garlic and fermented whole soybeans. Another popular dish is the Chinese healthy cuisine “Tom Chap Chai”, a mixture of ten vegetables simmer cooked in a dark clear soup.
My guest was impressed that the soft boiled rice was only 3 baht, so although our Chinese banquet feast cost much less than 200 baht, it still remains one of my and my family’s favourite restaurants.
