Making Phuket fashionable

THE Phuket International Fashion Week is set to brighten up the current low season and boost tourism with daily fashion parades at Jungceylon from June 24 until June 30.
The event will be sponsored by the Tourist Authority of Thailand, UNESCO, the Millennium Resort and the Bangkok-based Phoenix model agency.

Phoenix CEO, Trisorn Triboon, said the festival was designed to promote tourism during the low season when hotel occupancy rates on the island were at their lowest in 20 years.
“A fashion extravaganza will attract more people to Phuket, giving the island a chance to showcase its beautiful beaches and its many other attractions to the fashion-conscious fraternity,” he said. “Phuket Fashion Week is a mixture of Thai culture and modern western fashion styles, so this is a perfect setting.”

He said the costumes, which have been created by some of Thailand’s top fashion designers, would be divided into categories to suit Thailand’s regular festivals, such as Songkran, or Thai New Year, and the Loy Krathong festival in November, which pays homage to the River Goddess.

Khun Trisorn said there would be a total of 21 fashion shows featuring more than 150 top models and celebrities who will model some of the latest fashions by some of the world’s best designers. There will also be more than 30 of Thailand’s top artists performing seven concerts over seven nights.

Khun Trisorn said the Phuket International Fashion Week would become a regular event on the world fashion calendar , and was already being promoted in 198 different countries.

Money raised during Fashion Week will be donated to charities including the Association of HIV Patients, the Thai Red Cross Society and victims of the 2004 tsunami.
