MARCH 30, 12:32 pm: The fire on March 28 at Marriott Patong (erstwhile Grand Tropicana Resort) is anticipated to have caused damage to the tune of 1 million baht. A notice board that caught fire during a welding process is believed to have caused the conflagration.

Pol. Col. Sopol Barirak, inspector at Kathu police station, told the Post that the fire services rushed to the spot, 47 Ruamjaipattana Rd., Patong, Kathu, Phuket as soon as they heard the notification over the radio service.

Three fire engines were immediately deployed, which helped the firefighters control the flames in about twenty minutes.

The building contract manager reportedly told the police that ?while our staff was fitting the iron, something went wrong with the electric current, and so a flame suddenly shot up and burned the hotel board. The prevalent windy and hot conditions helped the fire to spread quickly.?

Pol. Col. Sopol Barirak has instructed the manager of the construction site and their staff of the building contractor to be present at the police station for further investigations.
