If you find being stuck behind a car driven by a doddery old dear or worse yet a grumpy old man frustrating, then the Post recommends you avoid all Phuket roads on 6 March.
For it will be anything but an easy Sunday morning when up to 40 vehicles with predominantly elderly expats at the wheel screech off to compete in the Grumpy Old Men?s Society?s (GOMS) first of a planned annual Car Rally/Treasure Hunt.
Organiser, John Devenport said, ?We have received almost 55,000 baht from sponsors, but we hope to receive more from donations on the day.?
The 145-kilometre route has been designed to take entrants to some of the more remote areas of Phuket.
Mr Devenport added, ?It is not a race but a social event that will test the navigational
and timekeeping skills of the crews.?
Mr Devenport was also quick to point out that everything would be above board and they would not be breaking the speed limit. To ensure entrants stay strictly on route, each team (driver and navigator) will need to submit photographic evidence of places or buildings as proof of passage.
The rally is divided into morning (72kms) and afternoon (a further 72 kms) courses with a lunch break in between.
Entrants must complete the first part within 2.5 hours and the second part within 1.5 hours or face a time penalty.
The overall winner of the event will receive a Land Rover trophy, while those in second place will get a Da Vinci trophy, and those in respectable third will get a Kan Eang trophy.
Registration for potentially the most dangerous event Phuket has ever hosted begins at 9am, and the race begins at 10am.
