Soi Dog Foundation in Serious Trouble
Tue 3 May 2011
Phuket?s iconic Soi Dog Foundation is facing possible closure or expensive and disruptive relocation of its northern Phuket, Mai Khao shelter to 250 dogs unless it raises THB 5 million by October this year.

Soi Dog Director John Dalley said the future of Soi Dog Foundation is in ?serious trouble? if the shelter is not paid for by October as much of its critical care facilities are located there.

Soi Dog purchased half the land on which the shelter is located in 2009 but must purchase the other half by October or face a serious situation.

Mr. Dalley said Soi Dog had to make a choice between using general funds to secure the shelter, or prevent the ?tragic deaths of countless animals through our mass vaccination programme,? caused by an outbreak of distemper which enormously increased operating costs over the last six months.

Faced with that stark choice, Mr Dalley said: ?We made the choice to help the animals.?
While this work continues, Soi Dog still has to raise the necessary funds for the shelter land. The land owner has already has been approached by two commercial organisations to purchase the land.

Soi Dog has raised half of the THB10 million required, but is now in a desperate race to acquire the remaining THB5 million through donations.

A Sunday brunch fund raising event will be held at Evason Phuket & Bon Island on 22 May between Noon-4pm to help with fund raising. The 2000 baht per head cost includes a buffet, free flow drinks and entertainment.
