There are about five members in Phuket House Mafia (PHM). I say ?about? because there are
so many and they dart from one place to another with such speed that it?s hard to know for
sure.
I did a head count when I went to interview the guys; there was Q, Tuzz, Nu, Mong and the newest and youngest member Sarit, P? Jin is out of town doing a gig. So that?s six? See what I mean?
It was just the boys and I and we?ve known eachother for a long time. Those seven cats are
like brothers. Sorry? six. First thing?s first, ?How did you get your name?? I asked.
One of them responded, I couldn?t tell which one. ?A Canadian DJ jokingly referred to our group as the House Mafia as we?re the source of the island?s DJ and House music needs. We
have the market sown up! Like the beach boys, jet ski mafia, beach chair mafia and the taxi mafia. We are the Phuket House Mafia.?
Unlike many of the DJ?s and patrons from which the genre of house music belongs, PHM is
quire resolute about their influences and in fact lack of influence, ?Our music doesn?t come from a dark place... a bad place. Most of us don?t drink, let alone do hard drugs. We just love house music.?
I was shocked; I assumed they would have said: ?To get a record deal man!? Or: ?To hook
up with girls in Ibiza and live it large.? You know, something gangsta! But nope they were
dead set on merely lovin? and livin? House Music.
Phuket House Mafia?s aim is just as simple; to produce and make music and continue to spin quality house music in Phuket and around the globe. I asked if they thought there
was a big enough scene on the island and they said there was, and although it was a small one it was no doubt a growing one.
The guys said they were not about who had the most friends on Facebook or how many friends they could gather to their parties... They were about the connections that they made at each party and the friends they made and built on the way.
They want to open you up to House Music instead of just eating up your daily dose of
pop and said, ?Give us a try and open yourself up to the musical possibilities. We are the Phuket House Mafia.?
Sometimes you get the feeling that you?re looking at the future of something great and
this was definitely one of those times. I was happy I was there.
Then I turned to Sarit the youngest member and just to mess with him asked: ?Yo kid, so you?re the youngest and a native of Phuket! So hotshot, how do you feel about spinning
with these local House Music legends? Do they make ya nervous... how ?bout it?
Sarit answered, ?I came in feeling I was a competent DJ. I thought, sure I can mix and I think my selections are on point. But the more I learn the more I see there is more to being a proper DJ than just showing up with your music and headphones on.?
I shuffled uneasily in my seat, the youngster continued, ?A really special mix takes time
and preparation.?
He continued, ?The more you?re ready for something, themore you can improvise and flow as the time comes and the more lucid and free your mix can become. There is so much more I must learn and try.?
Man! Almost Zen-like! I just wanted a: ?I like gurls and gurls like DJ?s,? type of answer.
Nothing of the sort from the PHM.
