Seeing as the Post?s anniversary 150th edition fell on 1 April, we went to speak with Vladimir McTavish, one of the three comics who will be playing at April?s Phuket Punchline Comedy Show, to talk to him about vodka, pranks and toilet bowls and whether there is a link between the three.
Do comedians tend to have a higher propensity for performing pranks and practical jokes than regular people? For Vladimir, it certainly seems to be the case, however more often than not the pranks are played on him, ?When I was a student in Newcastle, I shared an apartment with three other guys in quite a rough part of town.
?One night (it must have been March 31st) we all stayed up late drinking. I was the first to go to bed. I awoke the next day in my bed, in the street. My roommates had carried my bed outside, with me asleep in it and left it there as an April Fool joke.
"The trouble was that I could not arouse any of them when I woke up, and I had to stay out in the street in my bed until they woke up well into the afternoon.?
A few years later and perhaps as a result of being a prank victim for so long, Vladimir tried to enact his revenge, ?I once attempted an April Fool when I had friends staying over at my house. I put cling-film over the toilet bowl.
However, this rebounded on me, as I had had a couple of drinks and completely forgot about it. I was the first person to use the toilet. Worse still, it was my bathroom, so I had to clear up the mess!?
But is it as funny when the boot is on the other foot? Scottish- born Vladimir certainly thinks so, ?I actually enjoy it when people play pranks on me. I was once in a show where I played an alcoholic character, who drank lots of vodka during the performance. This was not, of course, vodka. It was vodka bottles filled with water. At one show, the stage
crew filled one of the bottles with real vodka, and I ended up drinking most of it. I don?t remember much about the rest of the night!?
Hopefully though this won?t be the case for the Comedy Club attendees and you remember most of the jokes from the night at the Holiday Inn Resort in Patong on Wednesday 20 April.
Also on the bill are British TV regulars David Morgan and Dan Evans.
