If the idea of surfing excites you, yet the practicality of balancing yourself
on a board while waves rage underneath scares the living daylights of you, then Stand Up Surfing (SUP) may just be the answer.
LONGtail is Phuket?s first and only SUP dedicated shop. The store, located in the beautiful tropical Layan area of Phuket, has a large selection of SUP boards, paddles and accessories for all your SUP needs.
The watersports-loving team also offer lessons and tours to help those interested learn this unique sport. The store runs a free early morning class every Sunday at 7am and supply paddles and specialised stand up paddle boards for all skill levels.
Much like regular surfing, yet with a paddle to aid balance, SUP?s origins can be traced back to Hawai in the late 18th century. As surfing gained in popularity, so too did the prominence of SUP, as its riders were typically surf instructors who drifted a distance back from the customer, and with the better visibility offered by their stance could see the swell well in advance.
The beach boys could also keep their customers? cameras dry so that they may be able to take photos of their aquatic adventures.
As time moved on and board designs and fashions changed, the paddle was all but lost in the history of surfing. A few surfers in Waikki continued to use a paddle but they were very much in the minority, until recently?
Jim Garrard, owner and instructor of SUPT said, ?The sport is not only great fun but promotes balance, strength and general fitness. It is excellent for surfers and non-surfers alike, as it provides a workout that strengthens your core muscle groups while giving you a fun and exciting way to view your natural surroundings.?
