Skylark tops day two at Cricket Sixes
Fri 15 Apr 2011
Friday?s play in the Phuket International Cricket Sixes commenced in scorching temperatures at Karon Stadium with all participants and spectators in good form.

The side representing Karon SeaSands Resort obviously enjoyed themselves a little too much as the hosts of the opening party, as they went down to Southern Stars early in the day's action.

Penang?s ADF Tigers, returning after a two-year sabbatical, put in a fine showing to see off Kuwait?s MG7. But it was Mahmood Abdullah?s second Kuwait-based team, Skylark (pic), that took top place after their two Preliminary Round games. Skylark now move forward to compete in the Cup and Plate divisions.

St Georges River from Sydney trounced the Dabangg Boyz, the local team once again let down by their batting despite a fine performance in the field.

The St Francis Camels wiped out any dreams of the local youth team, PCDC Natives, while the CBB Postels had a fine win against the Gold Coast Falcons. Toorak Prahan defeated the Cockatoos, despite fielding Thursday's ACST Player of the Day, Sonia 'Alby' Mangelsen.

Willetton Crows were too strong for the Gold Cost Falcons, while some superb bowling from Corner Tigers saw off St Francis De Sales.

At the conclusion of the Preliminary Round, two Spoon matches saw the Gold Coast Falcons hold off a spirited challenge by the PCDC Natives, while the Karon Seasanders hit their stride against the Cockatoos of South Africa.

The 91.5FM Phuket Island Radio Ladies Challenge Match matched the Andaman Angels against the Phuket Pixies with the Angels being victorious in a wonderfully spirited game.

The crowd were then entertained by local youngsters in the O'Tool's Phuket Junior Exhibition Match. Monies raised throughout the week will go towards the ACST Phuket Junior Cricket Development Fund.

The final game of the day was the annual Twenty 20 All Star Game, under the floodlights, featuring the tournaments best players representing Australia and the Rest of the World.

Former test cricket star Trevor Chappell managed the Antipodean side, which was led by Will Badger. Australian women's record holder Karen Rolton also in the side. The Rest of the World team was led by tournament favourite, Saurav Chatterjee.

The tournament, now it its eighth year, is organised by the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour in conjunction with Phuket Cricket Group. Twenty five teams from eight countries are taking part.

Play starts at 8.40am on Saturday and all spectators are welcome. Admission is free and refreshments are available. www.phuketsixes.com
